How to Install a Minecraft Datapack

Minecraft datapacks are a relatively new concept, they allow you to ‘install’ configurations in the game, specifically on a map, as you can only put one per map. For example, it allows a certain block to drop a different item when destroyed than it would normally.

What are datapacks?

It means data packs; what they do is configure certain parameters, making the mode or mechanics of the game change.

The reason for their use can be to add more adventure or difficulty to the game, change the behavior of a block or mob, or allow things you couldn’t before; in short, they are a lot of things. It should be made clear that these are not Minecraft mods; they are two very different things, but both are generally created by the community.

How to install datapacks in Minecraft?

Getting a datapack

First of all, you must have a datapack (Some come with texture packs, which are necessary to understand the datapack). These can be obtained from the internet; just search for ‘Minecraft datapack’ in any online search engine, and there will be many of their original authors. It is best to find a site where they keep them up to date to avoid compatibility issues and bugs.

Creating a Minecraft world

You have to create a new world, but before that, you have to select an option that says ‘Datapack’; this should open an interface to select them, but as there is none, you have to click at the bottom left where it says open folder, and in that place paste it as .zip, which is the extension they come in.

Once it has been placed in the appropriate folder, it should appear in the list. Just click the arrow on the package thumbnail to move it to the assets and then click the ‘OK’ button.

It should validate the data package in a few seconds; once this happens, just create the world, and it should work. If it doesn’t work, check that it is compatible with your version of the game.
